Despite opposition from Tynedale farmers and eminent archaeologists, the Government agreed to an 81-mile path along Hadrian?s Wall. Hexham MP Peter Atkinson presented a 1,500 name petition in the House of Commons opposing the scheme. Farmers and landowners feared that the trail would bring chaos to the management of land and livestock.
