Workmen from the Settlingstones Mining Company were searching for lead ore near the old Roman Camp at Procolitia when they uncovered a section of Roman Walling. This turned out to be a well, some eight feet deep, but inside the well were 24 Roman altars and numerous Roman coins with estimates as high as half a million being given.
