A bypass was to be built to divert logging trucks from the vicinity of the Calvert Trust, a 40-acre complex, which for nearly 25 years had allowed people with disabilities and their families to take part in adventure activities. The 155,000-acre Kielder Forest produced 400,000 tonnes of timber each year, some 5% of the timber grown in the UK.
