The advent of the chain saw revolutionised the forestry industry and made a nonsense of the predictions of a top Forestry Commission official. Addressing Hexham Horticultural Society at a meeting in the Queen?s Caf?, Mr. F. Garthwaite predicted that by 1975 there would be 6,000 workers employed in Kielder Forest, living in a series of new villages, with their own community centres, cinemas and shopping complexes.
