Out of 85 men belonging to 10 companies that composed the 1st Volunteer Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who volunteered for South Africa, more than a fourth belonged to the Hexham company, demonstrating to the world that Hexham upholds its reputation for its patriotic warlike spirit.
