Haltwhistle
Date: 1976-05-04
The last train on the 125-year-old Haltwhistle-Alston line was sent off to the strains of kilted pipers playing a lament. Throughout the day, about 5,000 people packed the train up and down the scenic 13-mile run. On 1st May 1976 rail transport in the South Tyne ended with the closure of the line. Since 1983, the South Tynedale Railway Preservation Society has preserved a two-mile stretch of the line between Alston and Kirkhaugh.
