South Tyne Colliery teetered on the brink of closure by operating on an unstable day-to-day basis. As one of the oldest pits in the country, employing 600 men and lads, it was at a distinct disadvantage compared with other collieries, as it was located far away from the shipping ports and therefore incurred heavy freight charges.
