The Youth Hostels Association was asked to delay the sale of Greenhead Youth Hostel as it sought to dispose of 32 outmoded and little used facilities. The Bellingham site belonged to the Duke of Northumberland and the Acomb hostel had a covenant in the deeds stipulating that it had to be sold for housing purposes.
