Greenhead bypass opens. Even though work is not expected to finish until next spring (1985). Motorists will no longer have to negotiate Greenhead Bank, a notorious accident black spot, which is particularly treacherous over the winter months. The first vehicles were diverted from the A69 on the 2.1 kilometre bypass on Sunday afternoon (02/12/1984). It was described as an informal opening by a department of transport spokesman, who said that further road-widening work still had to be carried out?Traffic lights would control the traffic until spring, when work on the bypass would be completed? Work on the bypass started in July last year and the spokesman said that, all being well, the opening would take place next spring...The bypass would take traffic from Greenhead Bank, which is often blocked by snow, and from Greenhead village itself and the level crossing.
