If you have a bit of time to spare, the Heritage Centre at Bellingham would like to hear from you. Whether your interests and talents lie in making visitors welcome and helping them to make the most out of their visit, or in some of the backroom tasks such as administration, marketing, publicity, database work, maintenance and cleaning, you will find a role at the Centre. The Heritage Centre has over 40 volunteers at present.
Some volunteers help on a regular weekly basis (and some work every day!) while others help out occasionally. Whatever time you wish to give will be valuable and put to good use. And it is not all hard work. You will meet interesting and friendly people from many places. Your fellow-volunteers will be a friendly down-to-earth bunch who will help you settle in and be ready to give you a hand when you need it. There is plenty of scope for people who wish to take on responsibility for a particular area of work.
The next volunteer afternoon is on Tuesday 29th March from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm. Please contact the Heritage Centre in advance on (01434) 220 050 or email: info@bellingham-heritage.org.uk
The website is: www.bellingham-heritage.org.uk
The current opening times are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm.
From Friday 1st April, the Centre will open Mon-Sat 9.30 am to 4.30 pm and Sun 10.30 am to 3.30 pm.
The current special exhibition is Eternal Horizons which features artefacts, documents and photos from churches in the area. This will be replaced on 4th April by Robert Stephenson – Life and Rainhill which features the life and work of the inventor of the locomotive ‘Rocket’. On Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th April the Centre will host its annual Classic and Vintage Vehicles Display. Admission to any of these events is £3 Adult, £6 Family and £2 Concession – including admission to the museum.
The Centre’s new railway coach project is well underway with the laying of track scheduled to be completed this week by Aln Valley Railway Trust. The two Mark 1 railway coaches will arrive before the end of March.
