Not since the 50's has Bellingham station yard been as busy as it was last weekend. The station yard was the venue for the Heritage Centre’s large and varied display of classic and vintage vehicles. This now annual event was baked in sunshine and had a record turn-out of vehicles and people. Along with local exhibitors there were others from the North East and from Scottish Borders car and motor cycle clubs. On Sunday visitors were treated to a trip to Hesleyside Hall, travelling in two vintage buses. According to Wesley Turnbull, the man behind the vintage vehicles weekend, “This was the highlight of the weekend with everyone having a great time on the trip, returning to tea and cakes in the sunshine in Station Yard.”

Wesley Turnbull and his co-enthusiasts displayed some of the wonderful old cars, tractors and motorbikes they own in what is one of the most enjoyable, relaxed and interesting venues on the vintage vehicle ‘circuit’. A new feature this year was the involvement of the Aycliffe and District Bus Preservation Society who provided the buses for the trip to Hesleyside Hall. The Heritage Centre last year invited the Bus Society to join in some of its activities. Their first joint venture was a service for visitors attending the Bellingham Show last August. A similar service will be provided for the Kielder vintage vehicles event next month, and again during the 2010 Bellingham Show.

First-time visitors to the museum expressed their surprise and delight at the range and standard of the historical displays. As well as the displays many people checked the ‘local family names’ database, while others enjoyed the thousands of historical photos in the photos database. Children loved riding the small grey tractor, playing the Sammy the Salmon videogame as well as trying on Reiver helmets, donning a mortar and gown in the schoolroom and braving the mine tunnel. Among the visitors were some members of the Robson clan who hope to introduce a new DNA tracing programme for bearers of the surname (The Robsons will publicise this programme later).

Terry Bragg, chair of the Heritage Centre, had this to say about the event: “We are profoundly grateful to Wesley Turnbull and his friends for organising this highly successful and wonderfully enjoyable vintage vehicles weekend. He and his co-enthusiasts each year provide a great display of terrific vehicles from the past. They do this at their own expense and give up their time and we are immensely in their debt. Their generosity is a great tribute to the community spirit of the north east. And we are thrilled at the continuing and developing partnership between the Heritage Centre and the Aycliffe and District Bus Preservation Society.”
