In its latest initiative, the volunteer-run Heritage Centre at Bellingham, Northumberland has organised its first ever live webcasts to internet viewers all over the world. The webcasts will feature local artist Rachel Pearson as she paints a mural in the Centre. The mural, Ninety-Nine Northumbriana, which will be approximately 2.5 square metres in size, will feature 99 images of Northumberland life. The first webcast takes place today Tuesday July 13th (10am – 12.45pm), and others are scheduled for Wednesday 14th, Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th, with more to follow over the next six weeks. Starting time is 10.00 a.m. each day. Internet viewers can see the live webcasts (or recorded videos when Rachel is not painting) of Ninety-Nine Northumbriana on http://www.bellingham-heritage.org.uk/pages/special-events/ninety-nine-northumbriana.php

Rachel Pearson is inviting visitors to the Heritage Centre and internet viewers on the Centre’s website to contact her with ideas for the mural. Suggestions will be put into a draw and the winner, chosen at random, will receive a limited edition print of an original watercolour by the artist of a local scene, ‘Hesleyside Woods in Spring’. Rachel says: “I have already decided on the majority of the images but I thought it would be interesting to solicit some from the public including, who knows, from web-viewers from far off places. I am delighted that I will have this new audience for my work. I will be happy to explain to visitors what I’m doing and why I chose the selected images. When it was suggested that I do live webcasts I went along with the idea: it is both exciting and terrifying!”. Rachel is stealing time from her other roles as secretary of Bellingham Show, councillor, administrator, actor, fiddler etc to do the work.

The mural is being sponsored by VARC (Visual Arts in Rural Communities). The webcasts are being sponsored by Northumberland National Park, MGH Consultants (who designed the Centre’s website) and the Heritage Centre.

Terry Bragg, who is chairman of the Heritage Centre, had this to say about the initiative: “We are extremely grateful to VARC, to our web designers MGH Consultants, and to Northumberland National Park for their generous support for this new Heritage Centre initiative, and for previous ones. It is a terrific encouragement to all of us volunteers at this small but hugely interesting museum. The Heritage Centre is drawing more visitors to the area year on year, and the feedback from them is highly complimentary. The mural and the webcasts will draw even more people to this beautiful part of Northumberland”.
