Organisers of the annual Classic and Vintage Vehicles Weekend at Bellingham Heritage Centre on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th April are hoping for a repeat of last year"s glorious weather which drew a record turn-out of vehicles and visitors. The former station yard on Woodburn Road is the venue for the Heritage Centre"s large and varied display of classic and vintage vehicles. Along with local exhibitors there will be others from the North East and from Scottish Borders car and motor cycle clubs. The event is organised by Wesley Turnbull.

Terry Bragg, Chairman, said: “The Classic and Vintage Vehicles weekend is drawing more exhibitors and visitors every year. Exhibitors say it is one of the most enjoyable, friendly and interesting venues on the circuit, while visitors are thrilled that a family can come and see these beautiful old cars as well as the museum for just £6. Adult admission is £3 with Concessions at £2."

Visitors to the museum will also be able to see the new temporary exhibition "Robert Stephenson – Life and Rainhill" which opened this week and runs to 11 May. The exhibition will highlight the engineering genius of Robert Stephenson and feature details of his competitors in the "Rainhill Trials". There will also be an opportunity at the exhibition to take an interactive tour of part of the factory and offices of Robert Stephenson and Company where the locomotive "Rocket" was built.

Or visitors can take part in the Heritage Centre"s new Knitting People Together project which involves knitting a long Scarf. The project was launched on Monday 4 April by knitters from Byrness, Otterburn, Bellingham and Leeds.

The Knitting People Together project is not a bid for a record but is an attempt to get as many people as possible, from home and abroad, to create something very special – a hand-knitted woollen scarf "made by many hands from many places". The names of knitters, and the places they come from, are being recorded and the Centre will produce a map linking these places. The organisers hope that some people will choose to mark a birthday or other anniversary, their own or someone else"s, or teach someone to knit or come and knit for the sheer fun of it. The Heritage Centre is providing the wool and the knitting needles.

As well as the permanent displays featuring Border Reivers, the Border Counties Railway, the Stannersburn Smithy and mining, visitors can check to see if their names appear in the "local family names" database, or enjoy the thousands of historical photos in the photos database. Children can play a variety of games from taking a ride on the small grey tractor, testing their dexterity with the Sammy the Salmon videogame and many more.

The Classic and Vintage Vehicles weekend is on Saturday and Sunday 9th and 10th April from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm each day.
