One of the most beautiful books in the Bible is the inspiration for an enthralling new collaboration between artist Kim Lewis and poet Linda France. They have taken the lyrical Song of Songs, which is believed to have been written in Israel around 3000 years ago, and translated it to the North Tyne valley in Northumberland. Their version celebrates love of the land, love between two people and love of spirit in a series of images and poems. Border Song will be exhibited at the Heritage Centre at Bellingham, Northumberland from Monday 20 September to Friday 29 October 2010.

After combining poems and prints with great success in Flying (exhibited at the Queen’s Hall, Hexham earlier this year) Linda France and Kim Lewis used a grant from VARC (Visual Arts in Rural Communities) for this new collaboration. Both artists live in Northumberland.

The Song of Songs (or Song of Solomon) has been interpreted variously by different religious traditions at different times: for some Jews it could perhaps be seen as an allegorical representation of the mutual love between God and Israel; some Christians may see it in terms of the relationship between God/Christ and the Church/faithful; others may see it as love between two people. The canticle has provided inspiration for many artists, musicians and writers down the years including J S Bach, Toni Morrison, Kate Bush and Sinéad O’Connor. Poet Linda France and artist Kim Lewis’s collaboration is a creative translation of the Old Testament book re-imagined for the North Tyne.  Its well-loved, stirring lyricism is translated to a new location in the wild-weathered landscape of the region.  Fresh-minted images and allusions reinterpret the classic text, rooting it in the contemporary setting of a rural community based in a northern valley and its environs.

Kim Lewis and Linda France have this to say about the work:

“Working together has produced a stimulating exchange of ideas between us – as text gave rise to picture, and picture influenced text, a conversation evolved leading us both to enter areas we had not imagined individually but chimed with what we jointly instinctively felt.  And, much as lyrics and music become more than each other when combined, Border Song reflects the dovetailing of our response.”
