What do you do when a famous but sweaty and probably footsore poet comes by, looking for a place to lay his tired body and a venue where he can raise money by reading his poetry? This is the challenge that Simon Armitage set communities along the Pennine Way which he is walking this summer ‘... in the style of the old troubadours...’. The Heritage Centre at Bellingham, Northumberland, where he will stop overnight on Saturday 10 July, is one of the groups providing a venue while one of its committee members has invited the poet to stay in his home that night.
The open-air poetry reading starts at 7.30 p.m. on Saturday 10 July in Station Yard, Woodburn Road, Bellingham, Northumberland. The main focus of the evening will be the reading by Simon Armitage whose poetry is acclaimed not only nationally but internationally. Also performing will be a talented array of local musicians, singers and a poet. The line-up is Jessica and Martha Carr (fiddle and flute), Don Clegg (‘mouthie’ [harmonica] and ‘pomes’), Gwennie Fraser (Northumberland pipes), Stephen Fry (singer and concertina-player) and David McCracken (songs). The concert is free but Simon Armitage will pass around a hat ‘...and people can give me what they I’m worth...’
Full details will be available nearer the time on the Heritage Centre website
