The Stannersburn Smithy

The Stannersburn smithy operated in this small North Tyne village from at least 1834 and was in daily use up until the 1970s. It was then gifted by Mr Grimwood, the last smith, to the museum at Woodhorn. Following refurbishment of the museum, the smithy was offered to The Heritage Centre, Bellingham. We gratefully accepted the smithy with its 500 tools and have re-erected it in the new extension. Some of the tools were made by Mr Grimwood. It is not possible to create a working forge but there is a video of a blacksmith at work, as well as informative display panels. The smith is shown making a piece of ornamental fencing.
