Knitting People Together

We invite you to come and help us knit a long scarf - a very, very, very long scarf. This will be the second scarf knitted by visitors and our volunteers but this time we want to record your name and town or district so that we can make a map linking all our knitters together. You may choose to mark a birthday or other anniversary or occasion - your own or someone else's - or teach someone to knit or do it simply because you like knitting or because you want to see the Heritage Centre. You can knit one row or a thousand! We supply the wool and the knitting needles.

Lynn G from Norfolk says we should organise a 'Stitch 'n Bitch' session!

Ann Ross plans to set up a similar project in Scotland. Good luck with it - let us know how you get on.

Here are some photos from the launch on Monday 4th April 2011. My pictures are poor (sorry about that!) but they give a flavour of the occasion:

Thanks to all the kind knitters who are taking part!

Like our first scarf, which will be on display, we are not setting restrictions about colours or tensions. This is very much a communal creative act. What we like about it is that one section could be knitted by someone who has never been to Northumberland before and the next by someone who has never moved out of the north-east. And, as in other aspects of life, people have different ideas about how colours complement each other - or clash!

To avoid delays when the Heritage Centre is very busy, you can add rows to a 'square' and then the 'squares' will be sewn on to the scarf. Beginners or learners are very welcome to take part as are groups of experienced knitters. There are occasions when there may not be a 'knitting teacher' available or space is limited so we recommend that you telephone in advance (TIC: 01434 220 616) if you are a learner or want to bring a group.

We are open every day until late Autumn 2011:  Mon-Sat 9.30am to 4.30pm and Sun 10.30am to 3.30 pm. Normal admission rates apply: Adult £3, Family £6, Concession £2. Donations towards the Knitting People Together project would also be greatly appreciated. Full disabled access and toilet. Free car parking.  Download a poster here!

Do come along - it won't be the same without you!    Scroll down for more...

If you are unable to come and knit yourself, would you be interested in having a local volunteer knit for you in this project? We have had offers from some local volunteers who are very happy to knit for you. Email us or write to us mentioning Knitting People Together and we will be very happy to organise it.
